The Art of Language: We are all alike
    -by Aihua

Granted, English and Chinese are two very different languages.  But in a certain aspect, I find that we're actually quite alike.

For one, we both make repeated errors on certain words.  Some examples:

Increasingly, the incorrect usage of "的、得、地" is gaining currency in Chinese writings, even in some prestigious publications.

Americans are NOT immune to such offence either.  The most common mistakes I found in my American colleagues' writing are as follows:

Use "its" when "it's" should be the choice.  In fact, some Americans drop the apostrophe "'" as if bbthe possessive form of the English grammer doesn't exist.

The words PRINCIPAL and PRINCIPLE are also problematic for some American friends.  So it's not unusual to see something like the following cropping up:

WRONG: My PRINCIPLE concern for this project is cost overrun.

CORRECT: My PRINCIPAL concern for this project is cost overrun.

WRONG: Mr. Bob Dole is our high school PRINCIPLE.

CORRECT: Mr. Bob Dole is our high school PRINCIPAL.
