Alisa.”
(Song for Arrow)
Quiet as a mouse, she lies
“Patience pays” she knows
Through her scope she scans the hills
The hills around a city known as Sarajevo
She is young, she is pretty
She is brave and she is lonely
The only friend she has
Is her rifle
She has downed so many unwary or vain targets
So many she no longer bothers to toll
She is aware how much they are afraid
Of a girl who is called “Arrow”
She used to kill out of hatred
She used to kill for revenge
But tonight she will shoot only to protect
A stranger who plays cello
Twenty-two days, 4.00 pm sharp
In a ruined library, the music wafts
For the 22 victims who fell under mortar fire
When they stood in a bread-line in the city of Sarajevo
And when the melancholic tune starts
The besieged city listens and grieves
For a lost way of life and all departed souls
And a once beautiful city of Sarajevo
Night after night, like a guardian angel in shadow
She trains her gun on any who tries to harm
A single bullet,
Always a bull-eye shot
“This is the last night, and my duty is done.”
She know she will not see the rise of the morning sun
Those men she has refused to obey will come
---merciless men who just want her to be a killing tool.
She can fight back and kill them all
But she knows what will be lost:
She will become just like them
A fight she may win, humanity the cost
The music ends; she smiles,
put down her gun and goes back to her den
Just before they kick down her door
“My name is Alisa” She says quiet and strong
-stronger than the gunfire that shatters
The night of Sarajevo.
